Karma Foods - "Do Good and Good will Come to You"

One of my friends kept recommending that I should try Karma Foods. After looking at their online menu, I was sold.

Karma foods was created by a couple in 2014, featuring the one of the only places in Vienna that actively puts "Mother Earth first". Using only organic ingredients and sustainable packaging, this cafe shows that they conscious about their footprint and are a model for other restaurants, because restaurants have the ability to be green too.

Focused on vegetarian and vegan cuisine with an Ayurvedic infusion, Karma Foods has a small menu, displaying their confidence in their cuisine. They have a modern take on healthy breakfasts and lunch, which includes some traditional Indian ingredients. There is also a weekly lunch menu, changing and varying by the Karma Foods location. My personal favorite is their All Day Breakfast location by a University (WU) in the second district (1020).

As breakfast is naturally my favorite meal of the day, I had to give it a whirl. I went with my boyfriend, who eats everything, and we both enjoyed our experience. We ordered one main breakfast course each.

1) Veggie Breakfast Tortillas (Vegan styled): tofu scramble with sautéed spinach, black beans, pickled radishes, guacamole, pico de Gallo, lime, cilantro inside of flour tortillas

I am a huge fan of breakfast tacos. I grew up in Southern California where breakfast burritos or tacos are the norm for morning cuisine. I consistently make my own breakfast tacos, but trying other recipes is lovely. I enjoy comparing and contrasting, and potentially altering my own recipes.

I love how Karma Foods sautéed the spinach with the tofu scramble, I am going to try it out on my own recipe! I loved this breakfast, it was the perfect amount of food for a large breakfast and I was extremely satisfied with my choice. I will definitely be getting it again.

2) Holy Smoke! Carrot Lox Sandwich: smoked carrot slices, vegan cream cheese, baby spinach, fresh dill and horseradish, onions, lime, on a full-grain slice of bread with a side of yogurt-dill relish

I was extremely curious about this dish. My boyfriend is a huge fan of Lox and as someone who has never intentionally had fish, I have always wondered about the LOX craze. Although this is very different from traditional Lox, I was so excited to try a veganized version.

I have to say, I was a bit disappointed. The carrot slices seemed to be marinated in some smokey, herb blend. I recognize the name is called "Holy Smoke!" but all I could taste was the smokiness.

I think it's common to over-flavor vegetables and such because people tend to want the umami taste that meat brings. However, I believe vegetables have such unique flavors on their own and that is what should be magnified through the seasoning.

And I also wanted to say that I am a terrible judgement on smokey flavors because I just don't seem to have that taste bud developed, but my boyfriend ordered this dish and he did not particularly like it. Maybe he just wanted the real Lox after trying that imitation.

We will be trying something else next time.

3) Immune-Boost Shot: orange, lemon, ginger, turmeric, pepper

I loved how the Immune Boost shot was very large and in a sealed container to shake up and mix the contents. My boyfriend and I love to drink it throughout our meal and add a bit of water to the "shot" every time to make it last longer! Plus this was the cutest glass bottle, I wanted to take it home with me!

Operating from the motto, "Do good and good will come to you," Karma Foods works at many angles to achieve this through their restaurant. They have a variety of offerings for individuals to do good to their bodies or their mind. Whether you are going to eat breakfast, picking up your soup detox, joining in for one of their Yoga and Brunch events, or going to a cooking class; Karma Foods wants you to think about the "good" you are choosing today.

I really enjoyed the vision of this establishment. It is so refreshing when restaurants execute their motto so dominantly in physical space. I left Karma Foods feeling really good about my body and ready to tackle on the day.
